Inclusion

We are committed to promoting inclusivity and cultivating an appreciation for the diverse world around us. All learners at Middlestown Primary Academy, as well as their parents and carers, are held in equal regard.

Our tailored curriculum aims to nurture individual identity and self-confidence. We are steadfast in our efforts to champion equality in every aspect of our educational journey, drawing from historical lessons that highlight instances where this was not always the norm in our society, all in the spirit of fostering tolerance.

We have created a Diversity and Identity Curriculum map which shows how we have woven equality and diversity into all areas of our curriculum. This map highlights where specific links are made within subjects. These links fall under our overarching principles where inclusion, identity and diversity are central to all we do.

Who is Involved?

Each and every one of us! We recognise that building a truly inclusive curriculum and nurturing well-rounded pupils requires the collective efforts of our entire community. We are dedicated to ensuring that everyone has a role in shaping how diversity is interwoven into our teaching. We’re actively engaged in various ways to amplify the voices of all our shareholders.

Mrs J Sholi: Mrs Sholi, our EYFS Lead and Assistant Headteacher, heads up our Representation and Diversity initiative. She oversees our commitment to integrating the representation of our community and wider society throughout our curriculum. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions on how we can further enhance our offerings, please feel free to reach out to her and share your ideas.

Our Staff: We are proud to say we have a staff body truly committed to being inclusive and allowing our children the opportunity to experience learning that is representative of the world we live in. Staff have training around equality, equity, diversity, unconscious bias and how we can make our children’s learning experiences inclusive and age appropriate.

Our Parents and Children: We share our curriculum overviews with parents and carers and invite comments on our representation of diversity. All ideas/viewpoints are welcome and will be considered. All of our children from EYFS through to Year 6 experience our diverse curriculum and can give their views via pupil voice. Our Art Leaders, History Leaders, Digital Leaders and Eco-Warriors are undergoing training sessions on how promote respect in our school, including encouraging positive talk about themselves and others. They understand how diversity is woven into our curriculum and the importance of this.

Diverse Reading Spine

In addition to our comprehensive whole school reading spine, the English and Curriculum Lead have joined forces to craft what we proudly call our ‘Diverse Reading Spine.’ This guarantees the seamless integration of diverse texts into our curriculum, starting from EYFS all the way up to the conclusion of Key Stage Two.

Some of these texts will serve as primary materials for English teaching, actively fostering a deeper engagement with reading, writing, and dramatic activities. Meanwhile, other carefully selected books will be shared as the class reading book for children to listen and explore the themes with their class teachers.

You can find out more on our English subject webpage.

Promoting the Nine Protected Characteristics

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Under the Equality Act, there are nine protected characteristics:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Race –  including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • Religion or belief
  • Marriage or civil partnership
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
  • Pregnancy and maternity

No form of discrimination is tolerated at Middlestown Primary Academy. We do not explicitly teach about all the protected characteristics in every year group. The curriculum is planned and delivered so that our pupils develop age appropriate knowledge and understanding during their time with us.

The protected characteristics are woven through our PSHE curriculum and the day to day routines. They also link to our learning with regard to British Values.
