Music

I like Music because we can sing along and have a joyful time.

Music Curriculum Statement

We aim to make Music an enjoyable learning experience for all. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences, building confidence across all aspects of Music.

Singing lies at the heart of good music teaching. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music as well as developing their ability to sing in tune and with other people. We also teach children to listen and to appreciate different forms of music, encouraging them to develop their descriptive skills when talking about what they can hear. Children are asked to ‘tune in’ to what they are listening to and can reflect on how music makes them feel and how it represents different emotions.

Children are taught musical vocabulary such as dynamics, pulse, pitch, tempo and texture and are able to recognise these in the music they hear and create. Children are exposed to musical notation and are given opportunities to compose their own music.

Children participate in weekly singing assemblies as well as having the opportunity to join the school choir once they enter Key Stage 2. The choir performs at several events throughout the year including church services, school events and the spectacular Young Voices annual concert. Our after-school programme includes Makaton where children can learn to sign whilst they sing, and Recorder Club where children can learn to play their very first instrument. Pupils can also choose to learn how to play a brass, woodwind or string instrument taught by the peripatetic teachers.

Year 5 children are taught Samba every week by the Wakefield Music Service, holding concerts termly to showcase their learning to their parents as well as their peers.

I like singing, playing instruments, changing sounds and making them sound better - it makes me want to dance!
