We strongly believe that all children should have access to a thoroughly planned, progressive physical education programme, which places a real emphasis on developing a wide range of physical competences, while encouraging healthy competition and teamwork.
Throughout their time at Middlestown Primary Academy, our teachers strive to equip all children with the necessary skills, knowledge and range of physical experiences to motivate them to lead lifelong active, healthy lifestyles in which they continue their participation in physical activity and sport.
We aim to give all children the opportunity to experience competitive sport by planning and participating in regular school-based events such as sports days, inter-school leagues and other local or regional events that may be appropriate and available.
We aim for all our children to lead healthy lifestyles and make good choices in terms of diet, physical activity and personal care. They understand the effects of eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep and leading an active lifestyle through increased levels of fitness and exercise. There are several initiatives we run or local/national organisations which support our goals.
The Daily Mile
The children enjoy taking part in The Daily Mile using the markings around the perimeter of the playground. One mile is equivalent to eight laps around the playground.
Parkrun
We take part in the weekly Parkrun at Wakefield Thrones Park on Sunday at 9am. Use the following link to register your child: https://www.parkrun.co.uk/register.
Our nickname is ‘Middlestown Mile Munchers’!
Sports Festivals
The children take part in different sporting festivals at Horbury Academy against other schools in the local area. If successful, the children can then progress to the Wakefield Games and West Yorkshire Games.
Wakefield Health and Wellbeing Charter
We have signed up to the Wakefield Health and Wellbeing Charter. By doing this, we agree to encourage the children and provide opportunities to lead a healthier lifestyle in partnership with Wakefield Council and have demonstrated an intent to improve the health and wellbeing of the children.
School Games Award
We were awarded the School Games Gold Award for the academic years 2018-2019, 2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. In 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, we were recognised with a virtual School Games Mark Award for the commitment to sport and PE whilst schools were closed for national lockdowns.
I love PE! It is my favourite subject! You get to exercise and get fresh air. I find sports really fun.
