PSHE is really interesting. I like learning about how friendships work.

PSHE Curriculum Statement

We aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive taught programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education that gives children and young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future.

We believe wholeheartedly in delivering the social and emotional aspects of learning and these are taught weekly to all children in school. Our assembly rota demonstrates the importance of British values and reinforces the themes of our PSHE curriculum.

Our aim is that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring community, whose values are built upon mutual trust and respect for all.

We feel that this will prepare our children to become respectful citizens in the future and that they will continue to show these same open and positive attitudes towards people they meet, regardless of their social or cultural background.

Below are the topics that are covered in Years 1-6 each term:

  • Families and friendships
  • Safe relationships
  • Respecting ourselves and others
  • Belonging to a community
  • Media literacy and digital resilience
  • Money and work
  • Physical health and mental wellbeing
  • Growing and changing
  • Keeping safe

Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) Curriculum Statement

The Department for Education (DfE) made changes to the Relationships and Sex Education following a nationwide consultation which came into effect from September 2020. All schools are required to comply with the updated requirements.

The guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships.

Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up will give the children and young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and help them take responsibility for their own well-being.

We have reviewed our RSE curriculum and policy in light of the statutory requirements so that we can be sure our RSE provision is appropriate for our children based on their:

  • Age
  • Physical and emotional maturity
  • Religious and cultural backgrounds
  • Special educational needs and disabilities

As part of this process, we consulted with parents, staff and governors which helped to inform our decisions on when and how certain content is covered. This consultation enabled us to reach a general consensus and we made adjustments to our policy and curriculum based on the feedback.

I like learning about new things each week so we have more knowledge to help people.
