Science

Science is experimenting, doing scientific research, learning about different things and finding out new things you might not have heard before. It's finding out more about how the world around us works.

Science Curriculum Statement

We believe that all children should have access to a high-quality science education which provides the foundations for understanding the world through biology, chemistry and physics. Our intention is to develop in all children a lifelong curiosity and interest in the sciences. We encourage children to be inquisitive and predict, explore and explain their own findings.

Our science curriculum ensures that children have a varied and progressive sequence of learning that meticulously expresses and realises the science national curriculum for EYFS, KS1 and KS2 for our school. The key documents below set out the carefully considered vertical curriculum that tracks the progression of substantive and disciplinary learning from EYFS to Year 6. This has been created in line with the national curriculum for science, which aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

Our curriculum and planning enhances the children’s scientific understanding and knowledge both independently and collaboratively. It enables children to learn through enquiry-based activities along with teacher-directed approaches, adapting science lessons to the pupils’ needs and nurturing positive science-related attitudes, including interest in broad science topics, enjoyment of science, science self-efficacy and participation in science-related extra-curricular activities.

The split focus of building substantive knowledge and developing disciplinary knowledge means that the children cultivate skills in working scientifically as well as their fundamental knowledge, developing a greater independence in planning and carrying out fair and comparative tests to answer scientific questions.

I like science because you get to do fun things like drawing food chains. I like learning about animals and going on the iPads to find out information.

Topics Covered

EYFS

In Foundation Stage we primarily teach Science through the topic ‘Understanding the World’. This is a specific area in the framework and includes the aspects ‘The Natural World’ and ‘People, Culture and Communities’. The main aim is for children to develop curiosity about the world, develop an awareness and knowledge of living things (animals and plants) around them and observe and partake in simple teacher led science experiments.

We provide our children with opportunities to develop a range of highly transferable skills values and attributes, including: problem-solving, observation, collaboration, open-mindedness, courage, resilience and curiosity. These combine to allow out children to explore, interpret and ‘experience’ the world around them, as well as providing the foundations on which all future learning can be built.

Children are guided to make sense of their physical world through a range of personal experiences. They use their senses in hands-on exploration of natural materials, learning and exploring, investigating the forces working around them, and talking about what they see using a wide vocabulary.

The construction area, both indoor and outdoor, provide a host of opportunities for children to explore Science through play as they consider place and time within their imagination, allowing them to explore, discuss and ask questions about the world around them.

I love making predictions in science. It gives me an incentive to do the experiment because I want to find out what happens!
